Everyday Prayer
Evening Prayers
Prayers for the end of the day, for gratitude and rest.
This prayer can be written out by hand and carried into St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. Send it in.
You have come to the end of the day. You carry the weight of it—the small joys and the sharp edges, the work done and the words spoken. You bring it all here, in a moment of quiet, before you rest.
A Prayer for the End of the Day
For What Was Given
Lord, as the light fades and the day closes, I come to you. I give you thanks for the breath of this day, for the life you sustained. For the food that nourished me, the work that occupied my hands, and the encounters, however brief, that reminded me I am not alone. For your mercy that met me in my failures and your quiet presence in the ordinary moments. I place this finished day into your hands, trusting that nothing in it is lost to you. Amen.
For Peace and Rest
God of peace, who neither slumbers nor sleeps, watch over me as I seek rest. Calm the turning of my mind. Quiet the anxieties that speak in the dark. Grant me the grace to release what I cannot carry into the night, and to receive the gift of sleep as a reminder that I am not the one who holds all things together. May I rest in the certainty of your care, and awaken with hope for the day to come. Amen.

Prayers for Evening in Difficult Days
When the Day Was Heavy
Father, the day has been long and its burdens real. I lay down the weight of decisions, of disappointments, of weariness that goes deep into the bone. I have no more strength to give it, so I give it to you. Hold what I cannot carry. Be the strength I do not have. In the silence of this night, let me feel the truth that I am held, even when I cannot feel anything at all. Amen.
When Anxiety Is Present
Lord Jesus, you calmed the storm on the sea; calm the storm within me now. The worries of the day have become the fears of the night. I name them before you, and I ask for the courage to let them go. Replace the circling thoughts with the simple, steady truth of your love. Help me to breathe, to be still, and to know that you are God, tonight and always. Amen.
When You Feel No Gratitude
God, I come to the end of this day and I feel no thanks. The words are hollow, and my heart is tired and closed. I bring you this emptiness instead. I bring the numbness. Look upon me in your kindness. Hold this space where gratitude should be. If I cannot feel thankful, let my simple act of coming to you be my prayer. Amen.

Questions People Ask
What is a simple evening prayer I can say? A simple evening prayer thanks God for the day that has passed and asks for peace and protection through the night. A short example is: "Thank you for this day. Watch over me and those I love as I sleep."
How do I pray when I'm too tired to think? When you are too tired, use the prayers of others. Read a line from a psalm like "Into your hands I commit my spirit" (Psalm 31:5) or simply say, "Lord, have mercy." Your desire to pray, even without words, is itself a prayer.
What do you pray when you've had a bad day? When the day has been bad, pray honestly. You can say, "God, this day was hard. I give you my disappointment and my hurt. Please hold me and grant me the rest I cannot find for myself."
Why is it important to pray at night? Praying at night is a act of surrender and trust. It is a way to consciously hand over the cares of the day to God before sleep, acknowledging that we are not in ultimate control, and to receive the gift of rest as a sign of his care.
Can I pray for someone else before I sleep? Yes. A simple intercession like, "Loving God, watch over [my mother, my friend, the one I love] tonight. Grant them peace, safety, and healing rest," is a powerful way to end your day.
