Bedtime Prayers

A gentle collection of prayers to close the day.

This prayer can be written out by hand and carried into St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. Send it in.

The day is done. The noise settles, and in the quiet, you might feel a need to gather up the hours—the good and the hard—and hand them over before you rest. A bedtime prayer is that small act of trust, a way to close the day not with worry, but with a word of thanks or a plea for peace.

A Prayer for Peaceful Rest

For Quieting the Mind

Lord, the thoughts of the day are still spinning. The things left undone, the words spoken and unsaid, they crowd in. I lay them all down now at Your feet. Quiet the noise in my mind and the restlessness in my heart. Grant me the peace of Your presence as I sleep, that I may rest securely in You.

For a Renewing Sleep

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of this day. My body is tired, and my strength is spent. I ask for the blessing of deep and renewing sleep. Guard my rest, repair my weariness, and wake me with a refreshed spirit, ready to receive the grace of a new morning.

For Surrender and Trust

Into Your hands, O God, I commend my spirit. I surrender this day with all its joys and troubles. I surrender my loved ones, my work, and my worries. I trust You to hold what I cannot carry through the night. Watch over me until the dawn.

Short Prayers for Bedtime

  • Lord, thank you for today. Please watch over me tonight.
  • Jesus, keep me safe in sleep and bring peace to my dreams.
  • God, bless my family and friends as they rest.
  • Holy Spirit, calm my anxious heart.
  • Mary, mother of God, pray for me as I sleep.
  • Angels of God, guard and protect this home.

Prayers for Bedtime with Others

For Children

Loving God, as [child's name] closes their eyes, wrap them in Your gentle care. Send Your angels to stand guard. Quiet any fears with the sound of Your love. Bless them with sweet dreams and a night of peaceful sleep. May they wake up smiling, knowing they are held by You.

For a Loved One Far Away

Lord, the miles separate us, but Your care reaches everywhere. As I prepare for sleep, I lift up the one I love. Wherever they are tonight, be their shield and their comfort. Grant them safety and restful sleep. May they feel my love and Yours across the distance, and may we both rest in Your keeping.

For Those Who Work the Night

God of all time, I pray for those who cannot rest tonight—the healers, the protectors, the caretakers. Strengthen them for their watch. Keep them alert and safe. Reward their service with Your presence. And when their work is done, grant them deep and deserved rest.

When Sleep Will Not Come

Father, the night is long and sleep is far from me. My mind is a prisoner to circling thoughts, and my body finds no comfort. I feel alone in the darkness. Please, come into this weariness. Sit with me in the quiet. If You will not grant me sleep tonight, then grant me Your companionship. Let my restless waiting become a kind of prayer. Hold me until the light returns.

What Scripture Says

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. — Psalm 4:8

The psalmist finds safety not in locked doors, but in God's presence, which makes true rest possible.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. — Matthew 11:28

Jesus offers an invitation to exchange our heavy burdens for His gentle, soul-deep rest.

He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber. — Psalm 121:3

Our ability to sleep comes from the comforting truth that God never sleeps; His watch is constant.

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. — Psalm 3:5

Both sleeping and waking are seen as acts sustained by God's faithful care.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters. — Psalm 23:1-2

God actively provides the conditions—safety, provision, peace—that allow for restorative rest.

Questions People Ask

What is a simple Catholic bedtime prayer? A simple and traditional Catholic bedtime prayer is: "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. Angels watch me through the night, and keep me safe till morning's light." Many also end the day with a Hail Mary or by making the Sign of the Cross.

How do I pray when I'm too tired to think? When you are too tired for words, a simple gesture or a single name is enough. Making the Sign of the Cross slowly, whispering "Jesus," or just holding your rosary can be your prayer. God hears the offering of your exhaustion.

Can I pray for good dreams? Yes, you can ask God to influence your thoughts and dreams. A prayer like, "Lord, guard my mind as I sleep. Let my dreams be peaceful and free from fear. Fill my subconscious with Your light," is a good way to ask for this grace.

Should I only pray thanksgiving at bedtime? While thanksgiving is a beautiful way to end the day, bedtime prayer can include anything: sorrow for faults, intercession for others, petitions for your own needs, or simply sitting in silence. The goal is to entrust the day to God.

What if I fall asleep while praying? Falling asleep while praying is not a failure; it can be a sign of profound trust, like a child falling asleep in a parent's arms. Your intention to pray is what matters, and God receives the desire of your heart.
